CHIM., PHARM. Alcaloïde très toxique extrait de l'opium. Claude Bernard place la thébaïne en tête des alcaloïdes de l'opium au point de vue de la toxicité sur les animaux (WURTZ, Dict. chim., t. 3, 1878, p. 371).
Prononc.:[tebain]. Étymol. et Hist. 1835 (J.-P. COUERBE, Analyses de plusieurs principes immédiats ds Ann. chim. et phys., t. 59, p. 154: la matière nouvelle que je nommerai thébaïne). Dér. du rad. de thébaïque; suff. -ine (-in). Bbg. QUEM. DDL t. 8.
